Sri Lanka tour of India 2017 - Fixtures & news updates
Sri Lanka tour of India to kick-off on November 16

The Board of Control for Cricket in India, on Tuesday (October 3), announced the itinerary for Sri Lanka's tour of India later next month.

The tour that comprises of three Tests, three one-dayers and as many Twenty20 Internationals, kicks off on November 16 in Kolkata. Sri Lanka will also play a three-day warm-up match before the first Test in Kolkata.

While the three Tests will be played in Kolkata, Nagpur and Delhi, the One-Day International series will begin on December 10 in Dharamsala, moving to Mohali (December 13) to finish in Vizag on December 17.

The second Test against Sri Lanka will be Nagpur's first since it was given a 'poor' rating by the ICC during the South Africa series in 2015. However, the Nagpur surface had since been relaid and the fifth ODI between India and Australia on October 1 was played there.

The T20Is will be played in the penultimate week of December on alternate days starting December 20 in Cuttack before moving to Indore (December 22) and the culmination of the tour in Mumbai on December 24. Thiruvananthapuram, that had initially been allotted a T20I against Sri Lanka, will instead now host New Zealand for a T20I on November 7. It has swapped fixtures with Cuttack.

Sri Lanka and India had locked horns in a bilateral series not too long ago. Earlier in August-September, India had visited the Island Nation and had swept them across formats.

Itinerary:

Test series:

1st Test - November 16-20, Kolkata

2nd Test - November 24-28, Nagpur

3rd Test - December 2-6, Delhi

One-Day Internationals:

1st ODI - December 10, Dharamsala

2nd ODI - December 13, Mohali

3rd ODI - December 17, Vizag

Twenty20 Internationals:

1st T20I - December 20, Cuttack

2nd T20I - December 22, Indore

3rd T20I - December 24, Mumbai

Sri Lanka arrive in India without batting coach Samaraweera

Sri Lanka's seven week tour of India got off to a stumbling start on Wednesday (November 8) as the team's batting coach Thilan Samaraweera didn't get his visa on time to fly with the team. The Sri Lankan team arrived in Kolkata on Wednesday morning but Samaraweera had to stay back home to wait for his visa.

Samaraweera was confirmed as Sri Lanka's batting coach on November 4 and the former middle order batsman, who lives in Melbourne, arrived in Colombo on Monday.

With the team scheduled to leave on Wednesday, Samaraweera wasn't able to conduct any training sessions but was expected to catch up as there were eight days prior to the first Test at the Eden Gardens. A spokesman for SLC told Cricbuzz that he was hopeful that Samaraweera would get his visa by Friday.

The first Test will get underway at the Eden Gardens on the November 16. Prior to that, Sri Lanka will play a two day warm-up game against a BCCI XI on the 11th and 12th of November.

This is Sri Lanka's first Test tour to India in eight years. Their winless Test record in the country is well documented, with the 17 Tests so far resulting in 10 defeats and seven draws.

Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya has been rested for the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka, the BCCI confirmed on Friday (November 10). Even though Pandya was initially named in the 16-man squad for the first two Tests, the selection committee, after consulting the team management, opted to rest him considering his recent workload.

The 24-year-old has been a regular feature in the Indian side across all formats now, having made his Test debut earlier this year in Sri Lanka. Since the conclusion of the Indian Premier League, Pandya has played 22 ODIs, three Tests and five T20Is. With India set to tour South Africa after the home series against Sri Lanka, it was decided to give Pandya a break to ensure he doesn't face any major injury concerns being the side's only genuine seam-bowling all-rounder.

India squad for first two Tests: Virat Kohli ©, KL Rahul, M Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane (VC), Rohit Sharma, Wriddhiman Saha (WK), R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma

Meanwhile, Punjab's Anmolpreet Singh has been chosen to replace the injured Naman Ojha in the 13-man Board President's XI squad which will take on Sri Lanka in a warm-up match ahead of the first Test. The youngster has been in terrific form since making his first-class debut this season, scoring a fifty and two centuries, including a double. In Ojha's absence, Kerala wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson will lead the side.

Board President's XI squad: Sanju Samson (C, WK), Jiwanjot Singh, B Sandeep, Tanmay Agarwal, Abhishek Gupta, Rohan Prem, Akash Bhandari, Jalaj Saxena, Chama Milind, Avesh Khan, Sandeep Warrier, Ravi Kiran, Anmolpreet Singh

Bhuvneshwar, Dhawan opt out due to personal reasons

Shikhar Dhawan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have been released from the India Test squad for the Sri Lankan series following a request from the duo owing to personal reasons.

Bhuvneshwar will miss the remaining two Tests against Sri Lanka while Dhawan will be available for selection for the third Test, a BCCI media release stated on Monday (November 20).

Vijay Shankar, the Tamil Nadu all-rounder, has been named as the replacement for Bhuvneshwar, who is set to be married on November 23.

A middle order batsman and a useful medium-pace bowler, the 26-year-old Shankar was part of the India A touring party to South Africa where he scored a crucial 72 against South Africa A to help his team clinch the tri-series. He recently came up with useful contributions with the bat in a couple of one-day games against New Zealand A.

Shankar also scored a century for Tamil Nadu against Odisha in the Ranji Trophy while he picked up a four-wicket haul in the game against Mumbai.

Bhuvneshwar was the Man of the Match in the drawn first Test at Eden Gardens, picking up eight wickets in the game while Dhawan scored a brisk 94 in the second innings.

Ishant Sharma, who's also part of the squad, could come in as Bhuvneshwar's replacement for the second Test should India consider three front-line pacers. In Dhawan's absence, Murali Vijay is likely to be slotted in for the opener's position.

India squad for the second Test: Virat Kohli ©, KL Rahul, Murali Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma, Vijay Shankar.

Herath ruled out of Delhi Test; Jeffrey Vandersay added to SL squad

Veteran Sri Lankan spinner Rangana Herath has been ruled out of the third and final Test match, to be played in Delhi from December 2, after complaining of a sore back. Legbreak bowler Jeffrey Vandersay has been added to the Sri Lanka squad as Herath's replacement.

Left-arm spinner Malinda Pushpakumara was SLC's first choice to replace Herath but the 30-year-old failed the fitness test. Meanwhile, Herath is due to fly home on Thursday (November 30).

"We were hoping that Rangana Herath will feel okay for Delhi. But having spoken to him and physio we feel that he should come back. We have got lot of cricket ahead and he is important for us. Our plan was to fly in Malinda Pushpakumara, but he has failed a fitness test. Vandersay will now be the replacement," SLC chief selector Graeme Labrooy said.

In the first Test in Kolkata, Herath bowled a grand total of eight overs in seaming conditions, but his services were required more often in Nagpur where the wicket was much flatter. He bowled 39 overs in the only innings that India batted in the second game.

Herath had also missed the third Test of the home series against India, earlier in August, due to a similar back issue. He made his comeback in UAE, in the two-Test series against Pakistan.

Vandersay has played 11 ODIs and seven T20Is for Sri Lanka but is yet to make his Test debut. Sri Lanka have another spin option in their initial squad - the chinaman bowler Lakshan Sandakan.

Washington Sundar, Thampi, Hooda in India's T20 squad

Virat Kohli, who had been rested from the ODI series against Sri Lanka, has been rested for the T20 leg too. This means Rohit Sharma will lead the limited-overs sides in Kohli's absence. The T20 squad includes three new faces: 18-year-old Tamil Nadu allrounder Washington Sundar, Baroda batsman Deepak Hooda and Kerala quick Basil Thampi. The trio, along with Saurashtra seamer Jaydev Unadkat, who last played international cricket in June 2016, have been rewarded for their impressive performances in domestic cricket and IPL.

Shikhar Dhawan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have also been rested from the T20 squad. Instead, KL Rahul, who hasn't played limited-overs internationals since September, could open with Rohit. Jasprit Bumrah, who has earned his maiden call-up to the Test squad, will lead a new-look seam attack, which also includes Hyderabad fast bowler Mohammed Siraj, who leaked 53 runs on T20I debut against New Zealand last month.

"Virat, Bhuvi, and Shikhar have all been rested keeping the South Africa tour in consideration," MSK Prasad, the chairman of selectors, said. "With regard to the youngsters, someone like Basil Thampi, Siraj, Hooda, Shreyas Iyer - all these players have been doing really well in domestic cricket. After doing well in domestic cricket we have given them opportunities in India A tours to South Africa and against New Zealand here [at home]. Considering all those performances and taking performances of the top-class IPL we have considered these names."
